Khan Lab School Tutoring

Khan Lab School reports mastery levels instead of letter grades, and its middle schoolers finish a math course only after proving mastery on a proctored final challenge. Our tutors are current and former Stanford students who know this math deeply and are good at finding exactly where a student’s understanding breaks down.

We tutor Khan Lab students in everything from Pre-Algebra to Multivariable Calculus, along with chemistry, biology and physics, and help with writing and the Senior Capstone. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home or online.

Math at your own pace, with a high bar

Middle school math at Khan Lab runs from Pre-Algebra through Precalculus and isn’t tied to grade level. To finish a course, a student has to score at least 90 percent on its unit tests and on a proctored Course Challenge, a final test of the whole course, and teachers add hard problem sets from the Art of Problem Solving books. A tutor helps a student close the last gaps before a Course Challenge and work through the tougher problems with confidence. Learn more about our math tutoring.

High school science from sixth grade

Khan Lab middle schoolers take chemistry in sixth grade, biology in seventh and conceptual physics in eighth, all at a high school level, and most ninth graders take college biology through dual enrollment with Foothill College. A Stanford tutor helps a student handle the reading and lab work of a college course. Learn more about our science tutoring.

What parents say

“My daughter went from a C in Algebra II to an A- in one semester. The tutor was great, she really related to my daughter and made learning fun for her. Not only did her grade in math improve, her study habits improved and she’s doing better in all of her classes.”

Eduardo S., San Francisco

“The tutors themselves have been great: well-prepared, thoughtful and on-time. At each level of math needed, we found these Stanford students to be not just helpful tutors but great mentors as well. … This is a first class operation.”

Christy S., Portola Valley

“My son was a senior this year and I reached out to Cardinal Tutors and was lucky enough to find the most amazing tutor. I wish I had found him earlier.”

Sharon C., Los Altos

The Senior Capstone

Every Khan Lab senior completes a year-long research Capstone and presents it to a committee, and some tenth and eleventh graders take on an optional Cornerstone project first. A tutor helps a student shape a research question, keep a long project moving, and prepare for the committee presentation. Learn more about our English and writing tutoring.
