Carlsbad High School Tutoring

Carlsbad High’s honors classes come with real homework: Honors Geometry alone expects one to two hours a night. Our tutors are UC San Diego students who took many of the same courses not long ago, from Honors Geometry to AP Calculus BC.

Tell us about your student, and we’ll match them with a UC San Diego tutor who fits.

Proofs in Honors Geometry

Honors Geometry is where a lot of strong math students first get stuck. Carlsbad’s class spends much of the year on proofs, and most of those homework hours go to them. A proof can’t be finished by getting the right answer: every step needs a reason. Classes meet every other day on Carlsbad’s block schedule, so a student who is lost on Monday’s proof can stay lost until Wednesday. In a weekly session, your student talks through each step, and a tutor asks which definition or theorem justifies it, so the next proof starts from something they understand. Marine Science starts with the ocean

Carlsbad’s Marine Science class, for juniors and seniors, spends the first semester on oceanography and the second on marine life and ecosystems. Students who signed up for the animals meet the physical science first, and the spring makes more sense when the fall is solid. When the class reaches ocean currents, a tutor sketches them out with your student and asks what each one carries: heat, nutrients, plankton. In the spring, those same currents explain where the marine life is. Learn more about our science tutoring.

“My son had a wonderful experience with Cardinal Tutors when he needed help with his High School math and science classes. It turns out my son also needed help staying organized with all his assignments, something that the tutor helped with as well.”

“Their response time is outstanding. Neil responded quickly to my tutoring request for my 15-year-old. Love knowing that I have access to these high-quality services for my children. And, we use them via Zoom since we live in Tennessee. I cannot say enough great things about this business:)”

AP Language, then AP Literature

Carlsbad’s AP English runs over two years: the junior course prepares students for the Language exam, and the senior course for Literature. The surprise in Language, even for good writers, is that the essays are about how an author persuades, not whether the author is right. A session starts with the reading. Your student explains what the author is doing in a passage, and a tutor keeps asking how they know until the answer is specific enough to build an essay on. Seniors bring the same habit to poems and novels. Learn more about our English and writing tutoring.
