Del Mar students change school districts after 6th grade, and a math test in the spring of 6th grade helps decide where they start. Our tutors are UC San Diego students who help Del Mar students prepare for that step and for everything after it.

From Del Mar’s elementary schools to middle school
The Del Mar Union School District runs through 6th grade. Its students then move into the San Dieguito Union High School District for grades 7 through 12. Del Mar families are served by Carmel Valley Middle School or Earl Warren Middle School, depending on where they live. Torrey Pines High School is the neighborhood high school. In 8th grade, any Del Mar student can instead request a place at Canyon Crest Academy or San Dieguito Academy, which hold a lottery when more students apply than there are seats.
Why 6th grade matters for math
San Dieguito gives every Del Mar 6th grader a math test in the spring to help decide their 7th grade course. A student who wants to skip ahead and start 7th grade in the honors version of the 8th grade course takes a second, optional test. In recent years the passing score has been 70 percent, with no retakes. Our tutors work through 6th grade math with a Del Mar student so those tests hold fewer surprises. Private schools Del Mar families consider
Cathedral Catholic High School gives its own placement test in math and English in late January. Santa Fe Christian Schools in Solana Beach asks high school applicants for the ISEE. We prepare students for both. Learn more about our ISEE and SSAT prep.
