Math Tutoring

Looking for a math tutor in San Diego? Our UC San Diego tutors work one-on-one with students from 6th grade math through AP Calculus BC, at your home or online. Almost every local district teaches integrated math, where Integrated Math 1, 2 and 3 replace Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. Each district decides in its own way which students move ahead, and when.

San Dieguito: the 6th grade tests

The San Dieguito district serves Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carmel Valley, Encinitas and Rancho Santa Fe. Its middle schools start in 7th grade with a course called Integrated Math A, followed by Integrated Math B in 8th. Each is taught at three levels: a foundation level, a regular level and honors. That is the program at Carmel Valley Middle School, Pacific Trails Middle School, Earl Warren Middle School and the Diegueño and Oak Crest middle schools.

Placement starts in elementary school. Every 6th grader headed for San Dieguito takes an online math test in the spring. Students who want to skip ahead and take the 8th grade honors course as 7th graders take a second, optional test, where in recent years the passing score has been 70 percent and there are no retakes. After that, an A or B keeps a student in honors, and a C usually moves them to the regular course. A student who wants to move up into honors works through the district’s summer coursework on their own, and in high school also has to pass a test on it. Our tutors prepare 6th graders for both tests, help honors students keep their place and do the summer work with students who are moving up.

San Diego Unified, Poway and Coronado

San Diego Unified

Some San Diego Unified middle schools offer faster courses in 6th and 7th grade, so a student can take Integrated Math 1 in 8th. We help students at Muirlands Middle School in La Jolla in whichever course they are placed.

Poway Unified

Poway Unified lets middle schoolers cover two years of math in one. Incoming 6th graders, at Oak Valley Middle School for example, take a district placement test to get into the first of those courses. A tutor can spend the months before it getting a 5th grader ready.

Coronado Unified

In Coronado’s honors math, students at Coronado Middle School cover 7th and 8th grade math in one year. The district doesn’t count outside courses toward a faster path in middle school, and it lets some high schoolers take two math courses in one year. Doing well on the district’s own tests is what moves a Coronado student ahead.

What our San Diego math tutors do

Our math tutors are UC San Diego students in engineering, math, physics and the sciences, who took these same honors and AP classes a few years ago. They are good at finding the step where a problem goes wrong and explaining it more than one way.

We help students in every district keep up in honors courses and build confidence in the regular ones. In high school, we tutor Integrated Math 1 through 3, precalculus, AP Precalculus, AP Calculus AB and BC and AP Statistics, as well as the math on the SAT, ACT and ISEE.

What Cardinal Tutors families say

“My daughter went from a C in Algebra II to an A- in one semester. The tutor was great, she really related to my daughter and made learning fun for her. Not only did her grade in math improve, her study habits improved and she’s doing better in all of her classes.”
