La Jolla Country Day School Tutoring

La Jolla Country Day asks its students to think for themselves and explain how they reached an answer. Our tutors are UC San Diego students who help Country Day students do both, from middle school assignments to upper school honors and AP classes.

We tutor math, science, English, history and world languages. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home in La Jolla, University City or Carmel Valley, or online.

Inquiry-based work in the upper school

Country Day describes its upper school as interdisciplinary and inquiry-based. In practice, students are asked to work through open questions and defend their reasoning, in writing and out loud. That takes practice. Our tutors ask students to explain each step of a problem or an argument, which is the same thing their teachers ask, and help them prepare for tests in honors and AP courses.

Applying to Country Day: the ISEE or SSAT

Country Day asks applicants to its upper school, grades 9 through 12, to take the ISEE or the SSAT and to finish testing by February 1. Applicants to the middle school, grades 5 through 8, test on the same schedule. Both tests include kinds of questions students rarely see in class, and younger students especially benefit from practice with timing. Learn more about our ISEE and SSAT prep.

Sessions that fit a Country Day week

Country Day students often have sports and arts after school. We arrange sessions at home around those commitments, and online sessions are available on the busiest days.
