Berkeley High is big, with more than three thousand Yellowjackets, and it rewards students who know how to find their way. Freshmen start together in the Universal 9th Grade, then move into one of five learning communities for 10th through 12th grade, from Academic Choice and Berkeley International High School to the smaller academies. Our tutors study a few blocks away and know the school well.

Math 1, Advanced Math and IB

Most students take Math 1, 2 and 3, and those who pass the placement test at the end of 8th grade take Advanced Math, which leads to a combined IB Higher Level and AP Calculus BC course. There’s one more chance to join, in spring of 9th grade, with summer work and an August test. We help students prepare for those moments, and keep up once they’re in an advanced course, where the school won’t let them drop mid-year.

IB, AP and the writing load

Berkeley High recommends no more than two AP or Honors courses a year, so choosing well matters. In BIHS, we also help with the IB extended essay and the writing that runs through the program. Juniors and seniors can work with us on SAT and ACT prep and college essays.
