Muirlands is La Jolla’s public middle school, and its classes are taught at an advanced level. Our tutors are UC San Diego students who help Muirlands students with challenging reading, writing and math.

We tutor math, English, science and history. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home in La Jolla or online.
Advanced classes for everyone
Close to half of Muirlands students are identified as gifted, and the school says nearly all of its core classes are taught at the gifted level, which San Diego Unified calls GATE. Students may need more time to work through the reading and the assignments. Our tutors help Muirlands students handle the reading, write stronger essays and think through open-ended projects. The Seminar program
Muirlands also has Seminar, a separate program for highly gifted students. The school says placement depends only on a student’s score on the district’s gifted test. Families who want Seminar fill out a form during a window that runs from late summer through the spring before 6th grade, and the form alone doesn’t secure a place. Our tutors help Seminar students with the heavier reading and writing.
Math at Muirlands
San Diego Unified teaches Integrated Math 1, 2 and 3 in place of Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. The district also has faster 6th and 7th grade courses that lead to Integrated Math 1 in 8th grade, at the middle schools that offer them.
