Carlmont High School Tutoring

Carlmont’s math goes all the way to Multivariable Calculus, a course built to match a university multivariable class. Our tutors are current and former Stanford students who explain hard ideas in plain language and know what the next course will expect.

We tutor Carlmont students in everything from Algebra I and Biology to AP Calculus BC and AP Physics C, and help with research papers and timed writing. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home or online.

Two math tracks after Algebra I

After Algebra I, Carlmont math divides in two. The regular track runs through Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus. The enriched track goes through Geometry Enriched, Algebra II/Trigonometry and Precalculus Honors to AP Calculus BC, and the strongest students go on to Multivariable Calculus. A tutor makes each course’s skills solid before the next course builds on them. Learn more about our math tutoring.

From Advanced Standing English to AP Research

Ninth and tenth graders can take Advanced Standing English, with intensive composition built on classical literature. Juniors in AP English Language write frequent timed essays and a research paper, and students who take AP Seminar, a course in research and argument, can go on to AP Research and spend a year designing an investigation of their own. A tutor helps a student plan a paper, use outside sources well, and write a strong timed essay. Learn more about our English and writing tutoring.

What parents say

“My daughter went from a C in Algebra II to an A- in one semester. The tutor was great, she really related to my daughter and made learning fun for her. Not only did her grade in math improve, her study habits improved and she’s doing better in all of her classes.”

Eduardo S., San Francisco

“The tutors themselves have been great: well-prepared, thoughtful and on-time. At each level of math needed, we found these Stanford students to be not just helpful tutors but great mentors as well. … This is a first class operation.”

Christy S., Portola Valley

“My son was a senior this year and I reached out to Cardinal Tutors and was lucky enough to find the most amazing tutor. I wish I had found him earlier.”

Sharon C., Los Altos

Biology, chemistry and the Biotechnology Institute

Carlmont students start with Biology in ninth grade, and after it they can apply to the Biotechnology Institute, a three-year program beginning in tenth grade with biotech courses, science-themed English and social studies, a year-long mentor program and college credit. A Stanford tutor helps a student understand the chemistry behind each lab protocol and write lab reports that explain results clearly. Learn more about our science tutoring.
