In Charles Armstrong’s MathUSee classes, students build with concrete materials, write the math and say what it means. Our tutors are Stanford students and alumni who took many of the same courses not long ago, from algebra to English.
Tell us about your student, and we’ll match them with a Stanford tutor who fits.
We tutor Belmont students from elementary school through high school, including students at Carlmont and Charles Armstrong. We help with math, science, reading and writing. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home in Belmont, or online.
Writing with less time at Carlmont
Carlmont’s AP Language students write frequent impromptu essays as well as a longer paper using outside sources. A writer who is comfortable revising at home can run out of time before making the argument clear in class. A tutor reads a timed response with your student and points out where the writing took too long to reach the claim. Learn more about our English and writing tutoring.

Turning Armstrong’s writing plan into a draft
Charles Armstrong’s writing instruction uses graphic organizers to help students plan and organize their ideas. Filling the organizer is one task; turning those notes into sentences that belong together is another. Working from the organizer your student uses in class, a tutor asks them to say one paragraph aloud before putting it into writing. Learn more about our English and writing tutoring.
How math works in Belmont
Belmont’s Ralston Middle uses fifth graders’ school math assessments, performance tasks and state test results to place them for sixth grade. Placement is reviewed again during sixth and seventh grade using classroom tests and other assessments. In 2026–27, students recommended after accelerated seventh-grade math can take Algebra 1 and Geometry together in eighth, completing both before high school. When those classes run together, a tutor helps your student recognize which algebra step a geometry question needs.
SAT, ACT and college essays
For the SAT and ACT, a tutor starts from a practice test and spends sessions on the question types your student misses most. For college essays, a tutor helps your student find a story only they could tell and shape it through drafts; the writing stays the student’s own. Learn more about our test preparation.
