Portola Valley Tutoring

Priory ninth graders can take Honors Physics, which leans on advanced labs and algebra. Our tutors are Stanford students and alumni who took many of the same courses not long ago, from physics to English.

Tell us about your student, and we’ll match them with a Stanford tutor who fits.

We tutor Portola Valley students from elementary school through high school, including students at Priory and Corte Madera. We help with math, science, reading and writing. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home in Portola Valley, or online.

Making time for Priory’s chemistry

Priory’s Honors Chemistry runs about three hours a week of homework and lab work, with substantial math throughout. If most of that time disappears into a calculation, the chemistry behind it gets lost. Your student talks through the chemistry first, and a tutor checks the algebra once the setup makes sense. A precise claim in Corte Madera’s Core

Corte Madera’s sixth-grade Core has students write an argument about whether technology is helpful or harmful. A broad verdict on all technology is difficult to support with evidence from the reading. Your student narrows the claim to one use of technology, and a tutor checks whether the evidence supports that more precise statement. Learn more about our English and writing tutoring.

How math works in Portola Valley

Corte Madera makes initial sixth-grade math placements in the spring of fifth grade, using school assessments, teacher recommendations and state test results. Students are reassessed at the end of sixth and seventh grade, so a math path can change as their understanding grows. One accelerated route prepares students for Algebra 1 in eighth grade and Geometry in high school. For a student taking that faster route, a tutor revisits a missed ratio problem from class before later work builds on it.

SAT, ACT and college essays

For the SAT and ACT, a tutor starts from a practice test and spends sessions on the question types your student misses most. For college essays, a tutor helps your student find a story only they could tell and shape it through drafts; the writing stays the student’s own. Learn more about our test preparation.
