Hillsborough Tutoring

Nueva’s seventh graders work with professional actors and directors in Drama Conservatory. Our tutors are Stanford students and alumni who took many of the same courses not long ago, from English to algebra.

Tell us about your student, and we’ll match them with a Stanford tutor who fits.

We tutor Hillsborough students from elementary school through high school, including students at Nueva, Crocker and nearby San Mateo High. We help with math, science, reading and writing. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home in Hillsborough, or online.

Keeping the foundations steady in Crocker’s math

Crocker’s compressed math combines seventh- and eighth-grade material at a faster pace. A sign error with negative numbers can keep spoiling your student’s answers as the class moves on to new algebra topics. A tutor returns to an error in recent work and asks your student to explain the calculation on a number line. Learn more about our math tutoring.

Reading a character at Nueva

Students in Nueva’s Drama Conservatory analyze the characters they play, so your student has to decide what a character wants, even when the words in the scene do not say it directly. A tutor reads the exchange with your student and asks which line or reaction supports their interpretation. Learn more about our English and writing tutoring.

How math works in Hillsborough

Crocker starts all sixth graders in grade-level math, then reviews placement at the end of the year. Moving into accelerated seventh-grade math depends on class grades, a readiness assessment and open-ended math tasks. Students who finish Algebra 1 in eighth grade are prepared to take Geometry in high school. A tutor helps your child show the reasoning in a multistep solution from class, including the part they worked out in their head.

SAT, ACT and college essays

For the SAT and ACT, a tutor starts from a practice test and spends sessions on the question types your student misses most. For college essays, a tutor helps your student find a story only they could tell and shape it through drafts; the writing stays the student’s own. Learn more about our test preparation.
