San Mateo High’s course guide asks AP Calculus AB students to allow about an hour for their regular homework. Our tutors are Stanford students and alumni who took many of the same courses not long ago, from algebra to calculus.
Tell us about your student, and we’ll match them with a Stanford tutor who fits.
We tutor San Mateo students from elementary school through high school, including students at San Mateo High and Hillsdale. We help with math, science, reading and writing. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home in San Mateo, or online.
Setting up San Mateo High’s calculus problems
The optimization work in San Mateo High’s AP Calculus AB asks students to apply calculus to a problem described in words. Your student can know the differentiation rules and still spend most of that homework hour trying to set up the problem. A tutor asks your student to sketch the situation and explain what each variable stands for before working through a problem from class. Learn more about our math tutoring.

“The tutors themselves have been great: well-prepared, thoughtful and on-time.”

From Hillsdale’s whiteboard to a written proof
Hillsdale’s Geometry develops its ideas through hands-on lessons and whiteboard work in pairs and small groups. A student who follows a group’s reasoning can struggle to write a proof alone. A tutor has your student rebuild a proof out loud, asking for the reason behind any step they cannot yet explain. Learn more about our math tutoring.
How math works in San Mateo
Students entering San Mateo High normally start in Algebra 1 unless their transcript shows they have completed the prerequisites for a later course. Aragon also offers a route that covers three years of math in two, with placement based on course grades and an acceleration exam. For students entering Aragon in fall 2027, that exam is on March 13, 2027. A tutor checks the algebra in your student’s current work, asking them to explain a step they usually do from memory.
SAT, ACT and college essays
For the SAT and ACT, a tutor starts from a practice test and spends sessions on the question types your student misses most. For college essays, a tutor helps your student find a story only they could tell and shape it through drafts; the writing stays the student’s own. Learn more about our test preparation.
