San Mateo High School Tutoring

San Mateo High runs a full biotechnology pathway that ends with a lab internship at a local biotech company and, for some seniors, independent research. Our tutors are current and former Stanford students who explain hard science clearly and care about getting the details right.

We tutor San Mateo High students in algebra through AP Calculus, in chemistry, biology and biotech, and in essay writing. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home or online.

Precalculus and AP Calculus

San Mateo High’s math runs from Algebra I and Geometry through Algebra II and Precalculus to AP Calculus AB and BC. Precalculus doesn’t carry an honors label, but the school says it takes the same amount of work as an honors course, about an hour of homework a day, because it prepares students for AP Calculus. A tutor makes sure a student’s algebra, radicals and graphing are solid, so Precalculus feels manageable from the first week. Learn more about our math tutoring.

Biotechnology, from first lab to independent research

San Mateo High’s biotechnology pathway begins with Biotechnology I and II, adds a long summer internship in a local biotech lab, and ends for some seniors in Biotechnology Independent Research. A Stanford tutor helps a student with the chemistry and biology behind the lab work and with writing up results clearly. Learn more about our science tutoring.

What parents say

“My daughter went from a C in Algebra II to an A- in one semester. The tutor was great, she really related to my daughter and made learning fun for her. Not only did her grade in math improve, her study habits improved and she’s doing better in all of her classes.”

Eduardo S., San Francisco

“The tutors themselves have been great: well-prepared, thoughtful and on-time. At each level of math needed, we found these Stanford students to be not just helpful tutors but great mentors as well. … This is a first class operation.”

Christy S., Portola Valley

“My son was a senior this year and I reached out to Cardinal Tutors and was lucky enough to find the most amazing tutor. I wish I had found him earlier.”

Sharon C., Los Altos

Writing in Advanced Standing and AP English

Ninth-grade English at San Mateo High centers on making an arguable claim, tenth graders add Socratic seminars and essays drawn from independent research, and Advanced Standing and AP classes assign many full-process essays along with timed, in-class writing. A tutor helps a student sharpen a claim, support it with evidence, and write just as well when the clock is running. Learn more about our English and writing tutoring.
