Nueva School Tutoring

Nueva is a school for gifted learners, and most of its upper school curriculum is made up of electives students choose. Our tutors are current and former Stanford students who enjoy hard questions and will follow a curious student as far as they want to go.

We tutor Nueva students in everything from middle school math and writing to calculus, linear algebra and physics, and help with research projects and college essays. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home or online.

Integrated math, then university-style electives

Nueva’s upper school math core is a three-year integrated program, Math 1, 2 and 3, that weaves together geometry, functions, number theory, data analysis, probability and the ideas behind calculus. Electives after the core have looked like university courses, from multivariable calculus and linear algebra to differential equations. A tutor works through proofs and problem sets alongside your student and goes deeper on the topics that excite them most. Learn more about our math tutoring.

Science that turns into research

Upper school science starts with chemistry in ninth grade and biology in tenth, then physics and a wide range of electives, which in recent years have included advanced mechanics, physics research, drug design and sensory neuroscience. A Stanford tutor helps a student master the fundamentals behind an advanced elective, read research papers, and design and write up an experiment of their own. Learn more about our science tutoring.

Writing, research and Quest

In English, Nueva ninth graders begin with The Great Dialogue, a course in literary foundations. Every year, each upper schooler also takes on Quest, an independent project built around their own interests. A tutor helps a student turn a broad interest into a question worth investigating, plan the work, and write about it clearly. Learn more about our English and writing tutoring.

What parents say

“My daughter went from a C in Algebra II to an A- in one semester. The tutor was great, she really related to my daughter and made learning fun for her. Not only did her grade in math improve, her study habits improved and she’s doing better in all of her classes.”

Eduardo S., San Francisco

“The tutors themselves have been great: well-prepared, thoughtful and on-time. At each level of math needed, we found these Stanford students to be not just helpful tutors but great mentors as well. … This is a first class operation.”

Christy S., Portola Valley

“My son was a senior this year and I reached out to Cardinal Tutors and was lucky enough to find the most amazing tutor. I wish I had found him earlier.”

Sharon C., Los Altos

Middle school in Hillsborough

Nueva’s middle school, fifth through eighth grade, is on the Hillsborough campus, and instead of traditional final exams, students show what they’ve learned at events through the year. The move to the San Mateo upper school brings far more choice about what to study. A tutor helps a middle schooler stay organized across subjects, write with confidence and get ready for that step.
