Oakland students go to very different schools: Oakland Tech and its five career academies, College Prep and Head-Royce, Bishop O’Dowd, and K-8 schools such as Park Day and St. Paul’s. Whatever the school, our UC Berkeley tutors cover the subjects it asks for, and help 8th graders with high school entrance tests.

From Rockridge to Montclair, your tutor comes to your home, or meets your student online.
Geometry as a freshman
In Oakland Unified, students usually start Algebra 1 in 9th grade. To begin high school in Geometry instead, a student takes Algebra 1 in the district’s summer program after 8th grade or in an approved online course, earns a B or better, and passes the district’s Algebra 1 certification exam in July. The summer course moves fast, and a tutor working alongside it answers your student’s questions as they come up and works through extra examples whenever an idea feels shaky.
When school ends at 8th grade
Several Oakland private schools, among them Park Day and St. Paul’s, end at 8th grade, so that year brings high school applications. Bishop O’Dowd asks every 9th-grade applicant to take the HSPT, given on Saturday, January 9, 2027. Our tutors take 8th graders through the HSPT, ISEE and SSAT one section at a time.
Oakland Tech, College Prep and more
We work with students at Oakland Tech, College Prep, Head-Royce and Bishop O’Dowd, along with Montera, Claremont and Edna Brewer middle schools. Some Oakland students cross into Berkeley for Saint Mary’s College High School or Black Pine Circle, and we tutor there too.
Matching your student
Before we suggest a tutor, we talk with you about what your student is studying and what kind of teacher brings out their best. If the first match isn’t right, we find another.
