Oakland Tech’s 9th graders spend the year in one of three Houses, each with its own team of teachers for English, social studies, biology and math. Our tutors are UC Berkeley students, and they help with every one of those subjects and with the harder courses that follow.

We tutor Oakland Tech students in everything from Algebra 1 and Biology to AP Calculus and AP Physics C, and help with writing in every English class.
Algebra 2 and Math Analysis in one year
Oakland Tech students can reach calculus by senior year in several ways, and one is an 11th-grade course that compresses Algebra 2 and Math Analysis into a single year. Two courses in one year move quickly. A tutor meets your student each week to go over the new unit and work a few problems harder than the class assigns. Learn more about our math tutoring.
Science in the academies
Biology comes first, taught inside each House. In 10th grade every student joins one of five academies, and in some the science follows the pathway: Engineering students go on to Physics, and the Health Academy, which has prepared students for careers in health and biology since 1984, adds Physiology and Biotechnology. Honors English and AP Literature
Oakland Tech juniors can take English 3 Honors, and AP English Literature asks students to write timed essays about poems and passages they have just read. A tutor practices those essays with your student: reading closely, choosing what to argue and writing it in the time allowed. Learn more about our English and writing tutoring.
