Bowman is a Montessori school through the elementary years and teaches grades 6 through 12 in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years and Diploma Programmes. Our tutors are current and former Stanford students who respect a student’s independence and help them use it well.
Tell us about your student, and we’ll match them with a Stanford tutor who fits.
We tutor Bowman students in everything from elementary math to Integrated Math and IB Analysis and Approaches, and help with IB projects, essays and the Extended Essay. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home or online.
Managing your own time
Bowman asks students to run their own schedules early. Upper elementary students plan their work a week at a time, and secondary students manage projects in six-week stretches. Some students thrive on that freedom right away; others need help learning to plan. A tutor helps a student break a big project into steps, set weekly goals and check progress, so the independence works for them. Learn more about our academic coaching.
IB projects and the Extended Essay
Bowman seventh and eighth graders complete the Middle Years Community Project, ninth and tenth graders the Personal Project, and Diploma students write the Extended Essay, a 4,000-word independent research paper, along with a Theory of Knowledge essay and presentation. A tutor helps a student narrow a topic, set a research schedule, and write an essay that makes a real argument. Learn more about our English and writing tutoring.
What parents say
“My daughter went from a C in Algebra II to an A- in one semester. The tutor was great, she really related to my daughter and made learning fun for her. Not only did her grade in math improve, her study habits improved and she’s doing better in all of her classes.”
Eduardo S., San Francisco
“The tutors themselves have been great: well-prepared, thoughtful and on-time. At each level of math needed, we found these Stanford students to be not just helpful tutors but great mentors as well. … This is a first class operation.”
Christy S., Portola Valley
“My son was a senior this year and I reached out to Cardinal Tutors and was lucky enough to find the most amazing tutor. I wish I had found him earlier.”
Sharon C., Los Altos
Math and science in the IB years
Bowman secondary students take Integrated Math I, II and III, then IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, at the standard or higher level, or Applications and Interpretation. Science alternates life and physical science in the middle years, and Diploma students choose Biology, Chemistry or Environmental Systems and Societies. A Stanford tutor shows a student how the integrated courses lead into the IB ones and prepares them for the IB exams with past papers. Learn more about our math tutoring.
