Charlotte Wood students prepare for the move to high school while learning to manage several subjects and teachers. Many go on to San Ramon Valley High, and the math path they take there often starts with a placement test given in spring of 5th grade.
Tell us about your student, and we’ll match them with a UC Berkeley tutor who fits.
Our UC Berkeley tutors help 5th graders get ready for that test and help Charlotte Wood students keep up in their classes. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home in Danville or online.
The 5th grade math placement test
The test has 50 questions in 90 minutes on 6th grade math, most of which a 5th grader hasn’t been taught yet. A score of 80 percent places a student one course ahead as a 6th grader. A score of 90 percent lets them take that course over the summer and start Charlotte Wood two courses ahead. A tutor teaches the 6th grade topics ahead of time and gives your student practice at the test’s pace. With the test in the spring, the fall of 5th grade is a good time to begin.
Once they’re at Charlotte Wood
A 6th grader who placed ahead is doing 7th grade math with a year less practice, and any gaps show up on the first tests. Our tutors help those students keep up, and make sure students on the standard path build a strong base. Students who want to move up later can prepare for the district’s summer math program. We also help with Core, the combined English and history class, with science and with the organization that a bigger school requires.
