Frank S. Greene Jr. Middle School (formerly Jordan) places each student on a core team, from Oak in 6th grade to Tangerine in 8th, so a set of teachers shares the same students. Our tutors are current and former Stanford students, and tutoring for Greene students works the same way on a smaller scale: one tutor who knows your student well.

Oak, Redwood and Sequoia: the first year at Greene
Greene 6th graders belong to the Oak, Redwood or Sequoia team for English, social studies, math and science. They also rotate through a wheel of five-week samplers, among them art, drama, computers and a Language Wheel with a taste of Spanish, French, Japanese and Mandarin. New subjects every few weeks mean new expectations every few weeks, and a tutor can keep the core classes steady while the wheel turns.
Choosing from more than 40 electives
Greene’s wheel exists to help students pick 7th and 8th grade electives, and the school lists more than 40 of them, from Money Matters to yearbook. Greene is also home to the district’s Spanish and Mandarin Bridge programs for students coming from elementary immersion. A language or a full-year elective adds real homework, so our academic coaching helps a Greene student plan the week around it.
Greene math, from Foundational Math to a Paly lane
Like the district’s other middle schools, Greene compresses four years of math into three, ending with Algebra 1 in 8th grade. Greene students who pass the district’s optional validation test can move one year further ahead, which can mean Geometry H in 8th grade. A math tutor can help a Greene student decide whether that jump suits them, and prepare for it. Each winter Greene 8th graders select courses for Paly or Gunn, and Paly counselors visit Greene afterward to follow up. We can talk through which Paly or Gunn math lane fits before the form is due.
