Carmel Valley Middle School Tutoring

Carmel Valley Middle School has only two grades, 7th and 8th, and the two years go by quickly. Our tutors are UC San Diego students who help CVMS students with their classes and with the study habits they’ll need in high school.

Two years, and a big change in 7th grade

San Dieguito’s middle schools start in 7th grade, so students arrive at CVMS from elementary school as the youngest in the building and leave for high school two years later. In 6th grade most of them had one main teacher. At CVMS they have a different teacher for each subject and more homework. A tutor can help a new 7th grader set up a weekly routine early. Math at CVMS

CVMS students take a course called Integrated Math A in 7th grade and Integrated Math B in 8th. Each is offered at three levels: a foundation level, a regular level and honors. Placement starts in 6th grade, when every student in the elementary districts that feed San Dieguito takes a math test in the spring. Students who want to skip ahead and take the 8th grade honors course as 7th graders take a second, optional test. In recent years the passing score has been 70 percent, and students can’t retake it. Once a student is in honors, an A or B keeps them there. Our tutors help 6th graders prepare for both tests, and help CVMS students keep their place. Learn more about our San Diego math tutoring.

A full schedule

CVMS has a Science Olympiad team and a music program. Our tutors help students with science, writing and organization, so a busy schedule stays manageable.

After CVMS

Torrey Pines High School is the neighborhood high school for CVMS. In the winter of 8th grade, families can instead request a place at Canyon Crest Academy or San Dieguito Academy, which hold a lottery when more students apply than there are seats.

What Cardinal Tutors families say

“It turns out my son also needed help staying organized with all his assignments, something that the tutor helped with as well.”
