San Dieguito Academy students choose to be there, and they arrive from middle schools all over the district. Our tutors are UC San Diego students who help SDA students settle in and keep up in their classes.

We tutor SDA students in math, science, English, history and world languages, and help juniors and seniors with the SAT, ACT and college essays. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home in Encinitas or Solana Beach, or online.
A school families choose
Like Canyon Crest Academy, SDA has no attendance area. Any family in the San Dieguito district can request a place in the winter of 8th grade, and the district holds a random lottery if more students apply than there are seats. So SDA freshmen come from Diegueño and Oak Crest in Encinitas, from Earl Warren in Solana Beach and from the Carmel Valley middle schools, and they don’t all start in the same place in math. A tutor can find out what your student’s middle school covered and fill in what it didn’t.
Four long classes a day
SDA’s day has four class periods of a little over 80 minutes, plus a homeroom on most days. With fewer, longer classes, each one covers a lot, and a missed day is hard to make up. Our tutors help students go back through each class, keep up with homework between those long periods and get ready for tests.
Math and science at SDA
SDA teaches Integrated Math 1, 2 and 3, each in a regular version, which the district calls college prep, and an honors version, followed by calculus, statistics or other electives. An honors student needs an A or B to stay in honors the next year. For math and science we match SDA students with UC San Diego students in math, engineering and the sciences, and the same tutor can often help with chemistry, biology or physics as well. Arts and activities
SDA’s programs include music, theatre, visual arts, robotics and The Mustang student newspaper. For a student who spends many hours on one of them, we arrange sessions around it, at home on a free evening or online in the week of a show or a deadline.
What Cardinal Tutors families say
“My daughter went from a C in Algebra II to an A- in one semester. The tutor was great, she really related to my daughter and made learning fun for her. Not only did her grade in math improve, her study habits improved and she’s doing better in all of her classes.”
