Coronado Middle School Tutoring

At Coronado Middle School, a student’s math course is decided by the district’s own tests. Our tutors are UC San Diego students who help Coronado Middle students prepare for those tests and do well in their classes.

We tutor math, English, science and history, and help with the organization middle school requires. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home in Coronado or online.

The tests that decide math placement

New 6th graders take a math placement test when they enroll. New 7th graders are tested and need a teacher’s recommendation. In the spring of 7th grade, students take a test that shows whether they are ready for algebra. Coronado Unified also says it won’t count math courses taken outside the district toward a faster path in middle school. So the way to move ahead at Coronado Middle is to know the material and do well on those tests, and that is what our tutors work on.

Honors math

In Coronado’s honors math, students cover 7th and 8th grade math in one year and take Integrated Math 1 in 8th grade. From there they continue toward honors precalculus and AP Calculus or AP Statistics at Coronado High School. The district teaches math with a program called CPM, in which students work through problems in groups. When that approach isn’t working for a student, a tutor can explain the same ideas another way. Getting ready for Coronado High

Coronado High’s classes run about 90 minutes, so 8th graders benefit from building strong study habits before they get there.
