At Rancho Buena Vista, juniors who take AP Biology or AP English Language are starting two-year IB courses that continue into senior year. Our tutors are UC San Diego students who took many of the same courses not long ago, from biology to AP Calculus BC.

Precalculus a year early
Integrated Math 2 with Math Analysis brings precalculus into the second year of integrated math. Students meet functions and trigonometry while they’re still finishing core algebra and geometry, so one half or the other tends to wobble each week. Reading real science in Honors Lab Biology
Honors Lab Biology at Rancho Buena Vista assigns reading questions, lab write-ups and reviews of science articles, and it lays the groundwork for AP Biology, the first year of the school’s IB biology course. The article reviews are the unfamiliar part: reading real science writing and saying what a study found and whether the headline matches it. With a tutor, your student reads one article closely and separates what the study showed from what someone claimed about it. Learn more about our science tutoring.

Poetry in senior IB Literature
The senior year of the IB English course is IB Literature, which adds poetry to the reading. Students who were comfortable with novels and essays in AP Language find poems harder to pin down: so much depends on a single word.
