At San Marcos High, sophomore English and World History share many of their assessments, so a student’s essays draw on both classes. Our tutors are UC San Diego students who took many of the same courses not long ago, from biology to AP Calculus BC.

We help San Marcos High students keep up in their classes, prepare for the SAT and ACT and work on their college essays. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home in San Marcos, Escondido or Carlsbad, or online.

Honors Algebra 2
Honors Algebra 2 at San Marcos covers more than the regular course: polynomials with complex numbers, harder rational graphs and more trigonometry. It’s the recommended route into AP Calculus AB. The rational graphs trip students up, with asymptotes and holes that look alike on a calculator. A tutor has your student predict a graph’s shape from the equation before drawing it, and the calculator only confirms. Learn more about our math tutoring.
Genetics starts with chemistry
Honors Genetics spends its first semester on biochemistry and how molecules interact before it reaches inheritance, which is why the school recommends both Biology and Chemistry first. Students who signed up for heredity meet chemistry first. A tutor makes the molecular part concrete, starting with what a protein actually does in a cell, so the later units on traits have something to stand on. Learn more about our science tutoring.

English and history together
Because sophomore English and World History share assessments, one essay can ask about a novel and the history behind it at once. A tutor helps your student find the connections: what was happening when the book was written, and which passages show it. In Honors English 10, students also prepare for Socratic seminars, and the session before a seminar is a good time to rehearse their two or three strongest points.
