St. Augustine is a Catholic boys’ school in North Park whose junior English year builds toward a full research paper on American literature. Our tutors are UC San Diego students who took many of the same courses not long ago, from chemistry to AP Calculus BC.

We help Saints students keep up in their classes, prepare for the SAT and ACT and work on their college essays. Sessions are one-on-one, at your home in North Park, Mission Hills or Kensington, or online.

The junior research paper
Written during the year’s American literature course, the research paper is the longest thing most juniors have ever written, and length is what makes it hard. A five-paragraph essay can survive on a good thesis. A research paper needs a plan, sources that actually support the argument and paragraphs that keep pointing back to it. Our tutors work with your student from topic to final draft: narrowing an idea into a claim, deciding what each source is for, and noticing when a paragraph has wandered. Calculus BC without AB first
On Saints’ honors track, students go from Honors Precalculus straight into AP Calculus BC in senior year. BC is a fast course, and the hard part is rarely the calculus itself: it’s the trigonometry and algebra inside every problem. When a BC problem stalls, a tutor works out with your student which piece of algebra or trigonometry tripped them up and practices that piece until it’s automatic. Learn more about our math tutoring.

Dissection labs in Anatomy
Anatomy and Physiology at Saints includes lab dissections, and a structure that looked obvious in the textbook diagram is much harder to find in a real specimen. Before a lab, a tutor goes through the diagrams with your student so they know what they’re looking for. Afterward, they connect each structure to what it does. Learn more about our science tutoring.
