St. Raymond School is a Catholic parish school on Arbor Road in Menlo Park that teaches children from junior kindergarten through 8th grade. We offer St. Raymond families one-on-one tutoring, and our tutors are current and former Stanford students who enjoy working with younger learners.

Algebra I by 8th grade
St. Raymond’s middle school math moves quickly: Math 7 in 6th grade, Pre-Algebra in 7th and Algebra I in 8th. So a St. Raymond 6th grader is already working in a course labeled for 7th. When a topic such as ratios or negative numbers doesn’t settle, it comes back inside every equation later on. Our tutors return to that topic, rebuild it with plenty of examples, and then rejoin the class where it is. Science follows an Earth, life and physical sequence over the same three years, and we tutor that alongside the math.
A program planned backwards from high school
The school says its curriculum is mapped backwards from high school entrance requirements all the way down to junior kindergarten, and its middle schoolers begin changing classes by subject. For a 6th grader, several teachers means several sets of deadlines. Our middle school tutoring includes the unglamorous part: a planner that actually gets used. For 8th graders applying to Catholic and independent high schools, we prepare students for the HSPT, ISEE and SSAT and read application essays with them.
Reading and math checks for new applicants
Families applying to St. Raymond should know that, in recent years, applicants to grades 1 through 8 have taken Star Reading and Star Math and written a sample during a visit day, and kindergarten applicants a readiness test; the school’s admissions page has the current steps. A few relaxed sessions on reading comprehension and grade-level math help a child walk in comfortable.
Help that fits the school’s learning support
St. Raymond runs a Learning Support Program that builds an action plan from benchmark assessments, teacher observations and parent input, starting with the homeroom teacher. If your child has such a plan, we follow it. We are tutors, not clinicians, and our part is patient practice in reading, writing and math.

What a parent says about organization
“It turns out my son also needed help staying organized with all his assignments, something that the tutor helped with as well.”

Lessons take place at your home in Menlo Park or the next town over, or online, one child with one tutor. When high school comes, we tutor students from Sacred Heart Prep and other schools nearby. Drop us a note about your child’s grade and what you’d like to see change.
