East Palo Alto Academy Tutoring

East Palo Alto Academy is a small public charter high school in the Sequoia Union High School District, once managed by Stanford New Schools and still working with Stanford’s Graduate School of Education. Our own tie to the university is simple: every Cardinal Tutors tutor is a current or former Stanford student, and we tutor EPAA students one-on-one.

Four exhibitions, one each year

EPAA students complete a required exhibition in every grade. Freshmen design and test a projectile launcher and analyze it with physics and algebra, then present the process aloud. Sophomores work across World History and English to produce an essay, an art piece and a Socratic seminar. Juniors research a 20th-century social movement and argue their case in a U.S. History essay, and seniors pitch a community service project to community judges. A tutor can help with each one: checking the algebra behind a launch, outlining and revising an essay with our writing tutors, or rehearsing a presentation until it feels natural.

Advisory goals, practiced at home

Advisory at EPAA is a four-year course of its own. A teacher meets a small group several times a week to watch grades and set goals with each advisee. Our tutors pick up those goals between meetings, whether that means turning in math homework on time or preparing for a test a week ahead.

College classes while still at EPAA

EPAA’s core courses line up with UC and CSU entrance requirements: four years of English, three of math and of science, and two of Spanish. Through its Early College Program, students may also take credit-bearing courses with Cañada College. We support students in a first college class, where the pace and the reading load are new. We provide SAT and ACT prep and help with college application essays. Many of our tutors applied to college only a few years ago and are glad to share what they learned.

The school draws mostly from East Palo Alto and eastern Menlo Park, and we come to your home in either one or meet online. We tutor students from nearby Menlo-Atherton too. Reach out with your student’s grade and goals and we’ll take it from there.
