At Northgate, juniors can take American Threads, which pairs English with U.S. history, with plays in the fall and a trip to the Steinbeck museum in the spring. Our tutors are UC Berkeley students who read closely and write well, and who also tutor math and science through AP Calculus BC.

We tutor Northgate students in everything from Algebra I and Biology to AP Calculus BC and Honors Physics, and help with AP Literature and AP Language essays.
Algebra II with Trigonometry
Northgate offers a fuller version of Algebra II that adds the unit circle, all six trig functions, identities and inverse trig, and from there students can go on through Pre-Calculus to AP Calculus AB and BC. Trigonometry is the part of that course that calculus and physics lean on most. A tutor spends time there with a student, until the identities feel like tools rather than formulas to memorize. Honors Physics
Northgate is the only school in its district with Honors Physics, which covers the same topics as the regular course but uses trigonometry and moves faster. Our tutors help a junior break each force or motion into its parts with sines and cosines, so the setup is right before the algebra starts. Learn more about our science tutoring.

AP Literature, then AP Language
Northgate runs its AP English courses in the opposite order from many schools: AP English Literature in junior year and AP English Language in senior year. A tutor helps a junior turn a close reading of a poem or novel into an essay, and the next year turns to the nonfiction arguments AP Language asks students to analyze.
