Mountain View High School Tutoring

Mountain View High School offers math at several levels and gives students time in the school day to ask for help. Our tutors are current and former Stanford students, and our one-on-one tutoring helps MVHS students choose a level they can sustain and then do well in it.

Honors or regular: three forks in MVHS math

MVHS offers honors versions of Geometry, Algebra 2 and Trigonometry/Math Analysis. The school’s course sheets explain the difference: Geometry Honors puts more weight on proof and on applying algebra to geometry, and Algebra 2 Honors adds topics such as sequences and series, complex numbers and conic sections. AP Calculus BC is meant for students coming out of Math Analysis Honors, and Multivariable Calculus waits beyond it. The district doesn’t approve skipping a math course and warns that summer courses can be risky, since they move quickly and need approval ahead of time. A math tutor can help your student test whether the honors pace fits, or fill the gaps that a fast year left behind.

Tutorial on Wednesdays and Fridays

MVHS builds a 50-minute Tutorial period into Wednesdays and Fridays, when students can meet with their teachers during the school day. It works best for students who arrive knowing what to ask. In our sessions we sort out what a student can fix alone, what we can work through together and what is worth taking to the teacher that week.

Counting the hours before choosing courses

At course selection, MVHS hands families a Time Estimation Worksheet and a Time Management Worksheet, so students can add up what a schedule will really cost. Juniors and seniors can also look at Freestyle Academy, the district program that pairs English with film, animation, design and digital media. We help students plan honestly, and our academic coaching builds the weekly routine that keeps a full schedule from spilling over.
