The Girls’ Middle School Tutoring

The Girls’ Middle School gives narrative feedback instead of letter grades, and every girl completes a high school algebra course by the end of eighth grade. Our tutors are current and former Stanford students, and families who want a woman tutor in math, science or computer science can ask for one.

Algebra for every girl by eighth grade

GMS teaches math in mixed-level classes using CPM, a curriculum in which students discover how ideas connect by working through problems rather than memorizing steps. Sixth and seventh grade build pre-algebra, from proportions and probability to slope, systems of equations and functions, and eighth grade covers a full high school Algebra I course. A tutor helps a girl work through the problems she gets stuck on, explain her reasoning out loud, and walk into each test sure of herself. Learn more about our math tutoring.

Writing every day in humanities

Humanities at GMS combines history and literature. Seventh graders learn to write a structured assertion paragraph and defend an argument with evidence, and eighth graders write daily in a year-long writer’s workshop, build a revised portfolio, and write an independent research paper during their Shakespeare unit. A tutor helps a student find her argument, back it with the right evidence, and revise a piece until she’s proud to put it in her portfolio. Learn more about our English and writing tutoring.

High school placement

High school advising at GMS starts late in seventh grade, with meetings with the placement advisor and essay-writing workshops. For the independent high schools that ask for the ISEE or SSAT, a tutor helps a student prepare so test day goes smoothly. Learn more about our entrance-exam tutoring.
