Math builds on itself, and in the East Bay the path through it is mapped out early. Choices made in 6th and 7th grade decide when a student reaches Algebra 1, and that decides how far they can go by senior year. One-on-one help at the right moment keeps those doors open without turning math into a race.
Every district does it a little differently
In Lafayette, accelerated students take Course 2/3A in 7th grade and Course 3B/Algebra in 8th. Orinda Intermediate offers accelerated CC 6/7, CC 7/8 and CC8/Algebra 1 classes. Moraga places students into acceleration using a scored matrix of assessments and grades. In the San Ramon Valley, 5th graders can take a placement test for 6th-grade acceleration, and older students can move ahead through the district’s summer math program. Piedmont teaches integrated math, with an optional compressed track that starts in middle school, and Berkeley High uses an 8th-grade test to place students in Advanced Math.
Getting to calculus
At Acalanes, Campolindo and Miramonte, students who start 9th grade in Geometry Advanced can reach AP Calculus BC by senior year, and students who start in Geometry can reach AP Calculus AB. Our tutors help students who are on that path stay comfortable on it, and help students who want to join it later fill in what they need. Every district is clear that acceleration is optional, and so are we. The goal is a strong foundation, not the fastest route.
From pre-algebra to AP Calculus BC
We tutor middle school math, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Integrated Math 1 through 3, Precalculus and AP Precalculus, AP Calculus AB and BC and AP Statistics, as well as the math sections of the SAT, ACT, HSPT and ISEE. Our tutors are Berkeley students with strong math backgrounds who are just as good at explaining a step as they are at doing it.
Sessions are one-on-one, built around your student’s own class, at home or online. Tell us where your student is, and we’ll find the right tutor.
